Yes, Folic acid does it again…!
The results of a 2006 study in which 60 obese people were given Folic acid supplementation were the following:
a) The levels of inflammation in their bodies were reduced.
b) Their sensitivity to insulin was improved.
Why is this important?
Both these biomarkers (inflammation levels and insulin sensitivity) indicate risk to develop atherosclerosis (clogging of the arteries) which is the main reason for most heart-related diseases!
What to do?
Consume enough folic acid daily!
The following foods contain folic acid in varying levels (from most to least):
-Lentils, collard greens, chickpeas, papaya, peas, asparagus, broccoli, strawberries, oranges.
-Also in organ meats, meat, seafood and eggs.
Is supplementation necessary?
YES!
It is advisable to take a multivitamin that contains at least 400mcg of Folic acid on a daily basis.
