More good news for wine lovers
©Anton Jv Rensburg

As you may or may not know wine contains two powerful antioxidants in the form of:

a) Resveratrol: the red pigment of red wine that protects the blood vessels against oxidative damage, and

b) Procyanidins: a component of the grape seed that has amazing antioxidant and health promoting qualities. These occur in white wines that were made without removing the seeds from the process (many white wines are made without the skin and seeds).

Now researchers in California have discovered another antioxidant called Procyanidin B Dimer which when given to mice with breast cancer reduced the size of their tumors. The researchers are very excited about this finding because it is the first naturally occurring substance that controls estrogen-dependent breast cancer development in a similar way as the available synthetic substances.

This does not mean that women with breast cancer will cure the cancer by drinking red wine. You’ll need about half a bottle of red wine daily to simulate the dose that was given to the mice and, at that dose, the alcohol increases your risk for cancer.

One glass:

This new finding supports the use of one glass of red wine per day as a health promoting habit.

Dr Anton
