In one of my newsletters I noted how magnesium can really help protect you against metabolic syndrome. In this article I would like to zoom in some more on metabolic syndrome.
Research in the United Kingdom spanning over more that 25 years has shown that the average person’s fat intake has fallen by as much as 30% (mainly due to all the health warnings regarding fat and heart disease). Furthermore, it was noted that of the reduction in fat consumption, the greatest reduction was with saturated fat (about 40%) which is found mainly in animal products. The strange thing is this: Heart disease has increased by more than 400% in the UK over this period of time! (I will give you a few seconds to ask yourself…but why!?) There are many reasons for this, but the two main culprits, according to research, is the consumption of high glycaemic index carbohydrates (refined starches and sugars) and damaged fat (more about damaged fat later…). High glycaemic index carbohydrates are closely related to the development of metabolic syndrome which in turn is a risk factor for developing heart disease! You need to seriously limit your intake of refined carbohydrates like sweets, sugary snacks, white (and even brown bread), refined maize meal, pizza and especially sugary drinks like canned cold drinks.
This would definitely include the new craze of ‘flavoured water’ which is actually just a cold drink without colour! Remember that there are substitutes for all these foods so you really don’t have to deprive yourself! We'd like to look at substitutes in more detail in the mentor programme. Kind regards
Dr Anton
