Certain exercises reduce stroke risk

It a recent study it was found that the risk for a first time stroke is prevented if a person takes part in regular, moderate - to heavy-intensity exercise. (This could include racket sports and swimming) 3000 people took part in this study with the average age being 69 and they were followed for a period of 9 years. Those who exercised lightly every now and then had no reduction in risk but the group who took part in regular exercise, specifically moderate to heavy exercise, showed a definite reduction in risk!
The interesting part was that a whopping 40.5% took part in no activity whatsoever and that only 20% participated in the required exercises needed to reduce stroke risk.

My opinion on this whole issue is that good habits can be formed at any stage of your life! So even if you’re not 69 it’s never too early or too late to start moving and to keep going. The trick here is to find activities that you enjoy and that fit in well with your particular stage of life and social situation.

In health,

Dr Anton

PS: In this study it was interesting to note that women did not show the same benefit from the exercise as men. It is thought that this is due to the use of hormone replacement therapy amongst the participants of the study increasing their risk for heart disease and stroke. So what now? Get of your HRT’s and start using a natural protocol to deal with menopause!
